Popsugar 2020 Book Challenge : A bildungsroman It was well done and would have been better just in print given I didn't care for the audio reader. The final statement of the story points that out. I mean, clearly the story is supposed to offend. But you have to wonder, don't you, if a non-Catholic girl becomes Catholic and later a nun in order to find some solace in the life that was at least, in part, destroyed by a few someone's who should have been her protectors. You can't betray someone you don't owe loyalty to. The best part about this book is when the former student, now nun tells her one-time friend, I didn't betray her. But, here's this girl who ended up sleeping with a teacher, while the other teacher knew, and then is the one in the wrong? The girl did exactly the right thing. Later, the one who has been normalized into thinking that sleeping with her teacher is almost understandable becomes a nun, writes a book on psychology, and ends up being the one who "betrayed" Miss Brodie because she basically told the headmistress how to dismiss Miss Brodie. This woman tells 15 year olds that one is basically intended to be the art teacher's lover while the other is supposed to be an informant on the first. To be honest, I don't know how I missed it other than being irritated by the audio reader. She even tells one girl she'll end the lover of her own former love. Later, however, those girls are told they have certain attributes as though they are required to become what she imagines them to be. In doing so, she is intending to be different from the other teachers. It creates a bond between her and the girls as though they were confidants and loyal. Jean Brodie is a teacher who shares far too much with her students about her personal life. IDK, it was both delightful and boring, and I was ready for it to be over by the time it was.ĮDIT:: Thought about this book as I was falling asleep and realized how much I hadn't paid attention to and only caught upon reflection. The story itself doesn't even feel much like a story arc. The girls in this book and their attempting to understand sexual intercourse was full flashbacks to my own 9-year-old reasoning.
